A prospective study comparing topical corticosteroids versus NSAIDs on IOP & the hypertensive phase following Ahmed GV surgery (Dr Darana Yuen)

Post-op NSAIDs have a potential advantage of not effecting IOP therefore hypothesized that their use could reduce the hypertensive phase if part of this phase is due to the so-called ‘steroid-responder’ phenomenon. The results of this study lead to the conclusion that there is too high a risk of wound leak if ketorolac is used instead of dexamethasone so this particular NSAID should never be used as a substitute for topical steroids.

The Ahmed versus Baerveldt (AVB) study 1-year follow-up results (Dr Panos Christakis)

There are two common glaucoma drainage devices - the Ahmed has valve to help prevent hypotony whereas the Baerveldt device needs a suture to tie it off for the first few weeks following surgery. There has been a belief that lower pressures could be achieved with the Baerveldt implant but at a cost of more complications than the Ahmed Glaucoma Valve. This study put this to the test.

Incorporating glaucoma risk factors in clinical trials (Dr Marcelo Nicolela)

In this talk, Dr Nicolela sets out to discuss how to incorporate risk factors into our clinical decisions about patients with glaucoma. He starts by defining risk factors, prognostic factors and modifiable risk factors. We tend to use risk and prognostic factors interchangeably; is there really a difference when it comes to glaucoma as a continuum?

Glaucoma epidemiology update 2010 (Dr M Cristina Leske)

This talk dealt with the current epidemiological data on primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) including descriptive, prevalence, and incidence data, as well as the analytics, the WHY, including risk factors for incidence and progression. 26Jun2010 1015hrs presented at the COS Annual Meeting in Quebec City by Dr M Cristina Leske.
